Lupus is an unpredictable chronic autoimmune disease affecting many parts of the body inside and out. Chronic means that symptoms can and do often last longer than six weeks at a time. With lupus something goes wrong with the immune system, causing the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs to produce auto-antibodies that cause inflammation, pain and damage in various parts of the body. Lupus is a disease that flares, where the symptoms worsen and you feel ill and then goes into remission, when the symptoms lessen or disappear and you feel better.
While anyone can get lupus, it most often affects women. Lupus is also more common in women of African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American descent than in Caucasian women.
The Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now, raises money for the following initiatives:
To fund innovative studies, and advocate for investment in lupus research to advance the science and medicine of lupus;
Translate research into useful programs, information, and tools for people with lupus, and ensure health professionals know about new means to diagnose and manage the disease;
They also provide caring support to people with lupus, their families and caregivers, while guiding them through living with lupus.
CEO of Love Our Locs Natural Hair Collection Micheale Washington’s late mother Daisy suffered from Lupus. After watching her mother fight the debilitating disease, the fight to cure lupus is one close to her heart. So she joined with Boss Moms Networking Group, which is an organization that supports mompreneurs, along with family members, friends, coworkers and clients to form TEAM DAISY.
The Walk to End Lupus Now is an annual event that brings together all people affected by lupus and the people who care for them for one purpose, to end lupus now. The Lupus Foundation of America joins thousands of walkers in almost 60 cities across the country to raise money for lupus research, increase awareness of lupus, while rallying public support for the estimated 1.5 million Americans who suffer from the disease. The Florida Chapter of the Lupus Foundation serves more than 100,000 people.
On October 22nd, 2016, TEAM DAISY met with thousands of other walkers at Marlin’s Stadium to walk the 1.2 mile journey. TEAM DAISY raised over $1,000 and had a fantastic time along the way.
